Stretch of the Month – Piriformis by Alysha Woodhead, RMT

The piriformis muscle tends to be very tight especially when you’re either moving a lot or little and especially during pregnancy. This causes sciatica which can send pain radiating down the leg and/or cause sharp pain in the buttocks. Stretching this muscle will keep it loose and prevent it from squeezing on the sciatic nerve thus causing the pain.

How to Do it:

1)     Lay on the floor on your back and cross the right ankle over the left knee

2)    Grip the thigh of your left leg and pull the knee towards you, lifting the foot off the floor

3)    Pull the knee further towards you to increase the stretch but be careful not to overstretch it

4)    Hold for 10 – 30 seconds
